Past Society Projects include...
2019: HomeFirst Vision Screening
This year’s Society Project was a collaboration with VSP Mobile Eyes to provide free eye exams for homeless and at-risk veterans at a HomeFirst facility in San Jose. On June 29th, eight doctors volunteered their time and in total, provided eye exams for 76 patients. Three patients were diagnosed with visually-significant cataracts, five patients had diabetic risks, and six patients were glaucoma suspects. These patients were referred to local offices to have their ocular health further managed. With their on-site lab, VSP was able to make 22 single-vision glasses. Forty-one bifocals and 6 single vision glasses were mailed to their lab to be fabricated and distributed to the patients at a later date. Overall, the event was very successful and our members were happy to provide much-needed eye care to this under-served community through this Society Project.
2018: Relay for Life (Campbell) for the American Cancer Society
2017: Canned Food Drive for Sacred Heart Community Service (San Jose)
2014-2016: Healthy Living Health Fair
A huge thanks to all those who helped make our Society Project of the Year a success! On Sunday, April 27th 2014, our society participated in the 9th Annual Healthy Living Health Fair held in East San Jose.
This year, we had two projects running parallel at one location. In the first part of our project, doctors provided eye health and vision screenings to underprivileged and low income patients, with the purpose of identifying those who should be seen for a comprehensive eye evaluation. In the second part of the project, full eye examinations were provided to homeless patients, who otherwise lacked access to healthcare. The VSP mobile clinic included an optical lab allowing for frames and lenses to be onsite courtesy of VSP and Marchon.
VSP provided equipment for both events. They also donated a total of 125 vouchers for patients who were unable to be seen and those who needed follow up care. Between the two events, we screened or examined over 130 patients!
A huge thanks to all of those involved … all of the organizers, supporters, volunteer doctors who helped make our Society Project a success! A special thank you to Susan Schwaderer, our veteran organizer/contact person for the Healthy Living Health Fair... and to all those people involved in the running of this project: Karen Cheng, Tina Doan, Bic Trinh, Kelly Kageyama, and our wonderful volunteers who saw patients: Kenneth Schwaderer, Saul Levine, Hien Nguyen, Taylor Tran, Linh Vu, Susan Gordon, Phuong Pham, Jeremy Walz, Minh Nhat Le, Mai-Anh Nguyen, Deborah McBride, and Jenna Buckley (Dr. McBride’s daughter who helped with pre-testing and case history).

MCT/SCCOS Vision Screening
As we all know, vision is a critical component of the learning process and experience. However, studies show that more than 80% of the children start school without having a proper eye exam and 60% of children labeled as "problem learners" may have undetected vision problem. Through the MCT program, the Santa Clara County Optometric Society aims to provide an effective method for vision screening for school age children in the San Jose Unified School District.
MCT Documents |
To help doctors who are interested in doing the the vision screening with the MCT program, Drs. Jennifer Hsieh and Lucy Yen have recorded this training video to help you to become familiar with the screening process, paperwork and equipment used. Dr. Yen will go over the various equipment inside the MCT kit, paperwork, referral criteria, etc.
Thank you for watching this training video and dedicating your time to help our children to see and excel. Please contact Drs. Vickie Young or Annie Yeh if you have any questions. |
